Researchers from the UC Irvine Reeve-Irvine Research Center and Department of Orthopaedic Surgery received a top award at the 36th Annual Meeting of the Cervical Spine Research Society. Researchers and surgeons from the University of California, Irvine Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Reeve-Irvine Research Center received a top award at the 36th Annual Meeting of the Cervical Spine Research Society for their project, “The role of durotomy and duroplasty following cervical spinal cord injury in an animal model.” The research team included surgeons from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery (Dr. Nitin Bhatia, Dr. Jeremy Smith, Dr. Ranjan Gupta) and researchers from the Reeve-Irvine Center (Thu Pham, Ryan Anderson, Oswald Steward). "This project may represent a significant finding in the road to finding a treatment for acute spinal cord injury," stated Dr. Bhatia, Chief of Spinal Surgery and Assistant Professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery at UC Irvine. "While a proven treatment for spinal cord injury remains years away, this kind of collaborative research between surgeons and scientists may help provide a a pathway to finding a cure." Besides his work in spinal cord injury, Dr. Bhatia is also an nationally recognized leader in cervical spine surgery, lumbar spine surgery, and minimally invasive spinal surgery. Dr. Bhatia has been featured as a treating surgeon in the television show "Guardian Angels, MD" seen nationwide on The Learning Channel (TLC) as well as programs on PBS. He has expertise in all areas of spinal pathology including spinal stenosis, disc herniations, spine trauma, scoliosis, complex cervical and lumbar reconstruction, and failed back syndrome. Dr. Bhatia has completed multiple spine surgery fellowships and has trained in both orthopaedic and neurosurgical techniques.
